CAROLINA BEACH, N.C.-Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Amel Davis mows the grass at Loran Station Carolina Beach on August 12, 2008, one of the many unusual duties that is part of life at a small, isolated unit. Keeping the grass manageable is necessary for not only aesthetics, but also to ensure ready access to the station’s four 625-foot towers, one of which looms behind him.
