  • Coast Guard rescued two people from a sinking boat off the coast of Jacksonville with the help of Good Sams yesterday early morning. The men radioed in a mayday distress call and were rescued uninjured the boat. Sea Tow is assessing the vessel for damage.

  • Coast Guard will be enforcing boating safety requirements by not only checking for life jackets and other safety gear but also by looking for illegal charter boats. During the Chincoteague Pony Swim on the Virginia Eastern Shore July 29, Guardians will be looking for boat captains without proper licensing and vessels carrying more than their authorized passengers. Citations will be written and fines can be up to $1,100 for a first offense.

  • Coast Guard and Border Patrol chased down a smugglers’ boat that dropped off 20 illegal immigrants on the shore of California yesterday morning. The 30-foot boat, which had been dangerously overloaded with the immigrants, escaped into Mexican waters before the agents could detain it.

  • Cutters from the Northwest including Canada gathered in Juneau to kick-off the Coast Guard District Seventeen Buoy Tender Roundup. All next week, the crews will share knowledge and conduct training. One of the more popular events, Buoy Tender Olympics, generates fun and friendly competition among the cutter crews.
