The United States, in cooperation with the North American Marine Environmental Protection Association (NAMEPA), is hosting the 2009 International Maritime Organization (IMO) World Maritime Day Parallel Event in New York City the weekend of October 16-18, 2009. The goal of World Maritime Day is to attract public, private, and government attention to the many environmental initiatives to reduce the effects of climate change happening in the maritime community. The theme for the 2009 event is “Climate Change; A Challenge for IMO Too!”
Government agencies, non-government organizations and industry partners are welcome to get involved in the New York event. In particular, coordinators are looking for the following support;
- Vessels with environmental initiatives to provide tours
- Displays for a Green Ship and Maritime Equipment Expo
- School Age Projects and University Posters for a Maritime Science Fair
- Government, industry, and academic leaders to chair and participate on Panel Discussions at the Delegate Conference
Since many people will not be able to attend the World Maritime Day Parallel Event in New York, ports around the nation are highly encouraged to plan their own observances. These events can be simple and low cost, while still providing valuable education, awareness and publicity. More information on hosting events can be found here.
