First, Happy Birthday Guardians! Today is the U.S. Coast Guard’s 219th birthday.
Authorities cracked down on Boating under the Influence (BUI) during last weekend’s Seafair on Seattle’s waterfront. Officials contacted between 500 and 600 boats and issued 110 citations for BUI, up about 23% from last year. Law enforcement officers set up a temporary detention facility and used a Mobile Impaired Driving Unit to process violators. Despite facing arrest and large fines, some boaters didn’t head the warnings. One man was arrested twice over the weekend for BUI. Story here
Authorities searched 80-miles of water near Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska yesterday looking for a cruise ship passenger who was reported missing and likely went overboard. Coast Guard, Civil Air Patrol, state and local officials were searching the area when a private aircraft hired by the cruise ship company to aid in the search spotted a woman’s body on the shoreline of an island in the search area. The body has yet to be positively identified and the incident is under investigation. Story here
