  • Yesterday, a Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City helicopter medically evacuated a Navy sailor from the USS Nitze about 30 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. The sailor was suffering from possible appendicitis.

  • Coast Guard Cutter Bear located a dangerously overloaded and unseaworthy 40-foot boat in the Bahamas while on routine patrol Monday. The Coast Guard Cutter Confidence interdicted the boat and found 164 Haitian migrants onboard. After providing the migrants with food, water, shelter and necessary medical attention, the cutter repatriated them back to Haiti on Tuesday.

  • The Coast Guard has closed a short section of the Mississippi River near Davenport, Iowa, due to a freight train car derailment on a bridge. The river is closed for an undetermined amount of time while the cars are put back on the track.

  • The Coast Guard is working with the boat’s owner and other officials to salvage a 62-foot shrimp boat that struck a buoy and sank on Saturday along the south wall of the Charleston Harbor jetties and is a hazard to navigation. Mariners should stay clear of the area and monitor VHF channel 16 for Coast Guard broadcasts.
