itCG-CGC Venturous offloads 107 bales of marijuana, two fatal maritime incidents

  • Coast Guard Cutter Venturous pulled into the Coast Guard base in Miami yesterday to offload 107 bales of marijuana weighing roughly 2,500 pounds and worth about $1.6 million. The cutter was on a routine patrol in the Caribbean last Thursday when a vessel failed to stop as ordered, launching a pursuit and a subsequent boarding. The drugs were seized and the four people onboard were arrested.

  • One boater died and three others were injured when their 18-foot boat capsized in the Chesapeake Bay just off of Fort Monroe yesterday. Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads received the report, began an emergency broadcast and dispatched Coast Guard and local resources to the scene. Good Samaritans nearby arrived first and rescued the four people from the water. The Coast Guard is investigating the incident.

  • A man who was diving for lobsters before dawn yesterday drowned off Santa Catalina Island, California. This weekend was the opening of the spiny lobster season drawing hundreds of novice and inexperienced people into the water, most of who are unprepared for the weather and water conditions. Coast Guard and local authorities will investigate the incident.

  • A helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans medically evacuated a man from a support ship about 20 miles off the coast in the Gulf of Mexico. The man was suffering from chest pains.
