- Guardians transported a 54-day-old infant girl from American Samoa who required immediate medical attention. The child was flown on a Coast Guard C-130 based at Air Station Barber’s Point, which was assisted by a Disaster Medical Assist Team (DMAT). The infant was successfully transfered to hospital facilities in Oahu yesterday.
Story here - A Coast Guard Station Marathon boat crew rescued a boater yesterday who was attempting to break a world record for distance on a personal water craft and raise money for the American Cancer Society. Guardians quickly located the man and pulled him from the water about 10 miles north of Marathon, FL where his personal water craft sank. Crew members attributed the successful rescue to the man’s safety precautions including having a marine radio and the SPOT GPS messenger.
Story here - Coast Guard investigators and a helicopter were sent to survey the scene where a squid-fishing boat ran aground. The 30-foot boat grounded off the east side of Santa Cruz Island early yesterday. The Coast Guard reported no injuries and is working with the National Park Service, the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and commercial salvage services to move the boat at high tide. Rutherford and Sanders, 1998 graduates of SCSU and Coast Guard officers, are also encouraging the Coast Guard to partner with HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) to increase the number of minorities in the officer ranks
