  • Guardians on board a Coast Guard cutter spotted a suspicious 25-foot vessel off the coast of La Jolla, CA. Guardians alerted federal agents, who dispatched a Blackhawk helicopter and a Midnight Express Interceptor vessel to intercept the fleeing boat. According to Customs and Border Protection officials, 21 illegal immigrants were found on board and the boat’s driver was arrested as a suspected smuggler.

  • In following up to a story reported on the Coast Guard Compass yesterday, the second person aboard a disabled sailboat located 100 nautical miles from Cape Lookout, NC was hoisted to safety. Guardians from Air Station Elizabeth City arrived on scene early yesterday but were able to hoist just one person from the vessel. The second rescue took place after a break in rough weather conditions.

  • On a sad note, a search by Guardians, local officials and Good Samaritans ended tragically, when a 32-year-old crab fisherman’s body was recovered near Astoria, Ore. The man fell overboard from a boat 10 miles off the mouth of the Columbia River Thursday afternoon. Helicopter crews from Air Station North Bend and Air Station Astoria, and a motor lifeboat crew from Station Cape Disappointment, Wash., were involved in the search.

  • On Wednesday, the fourth grade class at the South School in Rockland, ME was transformed into a Coast Guard cutter, when Guardians from the cutter Abbie Burgess were volunteering as part of the Coast Guard Partnership in Education program.
