  • The Coast Guard announced the findings of its year-long investigation into the loss of CG-6505 on Friday. While the pilots and crew of the helicopter and small boat involved did nothing wrong, investigators believe they have learned valuable safety lessons from the incident and will make physical changes to both platforms and implement new training exercises to prevent a similar accident in the future. • As winter approaches, frigid water temperatures pose serious risks to recreation boaters and fishing boat crews alike. In a unique program designed to go beyond simulation, volunteers exposed themselves to almost freezing waters in Lake Erie last week to report their experience to safe boating experts as part of an exercise called “Beyond Boot Camp.” The project, which is funded by the Coast Guard’s Boating Safety Division, is a follow-on to 2008’s “Cold Water Boot Camp USA” and is designed to provide Guardians and other first responders with critical information to aid in search and rescue operations during cold weather.
