Earlier this week Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak conducted the first Arctic domain awareness flight of 2010. These bi-weekly flights are critical to informing District 17 command on issues related to homeland security, maritime domain awareness, science research, and sea ice observation. The flights also provide an opportunity to test personnel and equipment capabilities in one of the most challenging environments in which the Coast Guard operates. This week’s flight was unique as it also included four Coast Guard Academy cadets engaged in a year-long research project on ways to enhance cooperation between the service and Native Alaskans and multilateral partners operating in the Arctic.
