On March 9th, 2011, the Coast Guard Foundation saluted the men and women of the Coast Guard’s westernmost operating area during its annual “Tribute to the Fourteenth District” Dinner in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Coast Guard Vice Commandant, Vice Admiral Sally Brice-O’Hara, delivered keynote remarks, expressing appreciation to the Foundation for its fervent support of the Coast Guard family. “Let me pay tribute to those who would pay tribute to our Service people”, said the admiral, noting the Foundation’s recent donation of several bicycles, sea-kayaks, and other recreational gear to Coast Guard Station Kauai. Coast Guard Foundation supporters purchased over two hundred thousand dollars of exercise and recreational equipment for Coast Guard units last year through the Coast Guard Foundation Shipmate Fund Program. Foundation President Anne Brengle announced the Shipmate Fund program will continue again soon, having recently enjoyed an influx of financial support.
Admiral Brice-O’Hara also highlighted the diversity of missions of the Hawaii-based District, the Coast Guard’s largest at over 12 million square miles. “Whether saving people from the coastal surf or protecting the Nation’s gateway to the East from maritime threats – this is the work of the Fourteenth Coast Guard District.” She also mentioned the local Coast Guard’s involvement in community service projects, including a recent partnership with the Rotary Club which donated over 7000 books to schools in American Samoa: “I’m so very proud to see that this is your work, too,” said the admiral. She went on to remark that the people of the Coast Guard share the same spirit of generosity and “giving back” evidenced over so many years by the Coast Guard Foundation.
The Coast Guard Foundation holds various dinners throughout the year honoring the Coast Guard. The non-profit organization is dedicated to the welfare of Coast Guard men and women and their families. It’s varied programs range from educational scholarship opportunities for Coast Guard family members to the current recapitalization of the Coast Guard Academy’s donated sailing vessel training fleet.
