I am delighted to congratulate the Department of Homeland Security on its ninth anniversary. Today, DHS continues exceptional work to protect the United States. I join with all Coast Guard men and women – active duty, reserve, civilian and auxiliary – who are proud to be part of the DHS team.

Under Secretary Janet Napolitano and her leadership team, the Department has combated terrorism; improved border security; ensured disaster preparedness, response and recovery; enforced legal immigration; and improved cybersecurity. The health and vibrancy of our Nation is directly linked to these invaluable services.

For the Coast Guard, we support these efforts by protecting those on the sea, protecting America from threats delivered by sea, and protecting the sea itself. These duties are provided across approximately 95,000 miles of coastline, 50,000 miles of navigable waters and 3.5 million square miles of maritime Exclusive Economic Zone. We also push the entrances to our ports overseas with international inspectors and respond across the vast oceans with cutters and aircraft providing persistent presence to detect and respond to threats and prevent them from reaching our shores.

I wish a happy anniversary to the Department’s more than 230,000 employees. Your tireless work to ensure the safety and security of the American people is greatly appreciated.

Semper Paratus,

Adm. Bob Papp

Commandant
