Changes coming to Post-9/11 GI Bill: Are you ready?

Department of Veterans Affairs logo The Post-9/11 GI Bill has provided thousands of Coast Guard members and their families with education and housing benefits over the years.  In fact, the ability for members and veterans to transfer a portion of their benefits to their spouse or child has been one of the most popular aspects of the program. Effective August 1, 2013, there are changes coming impacting the eligibility to transfer your education benefits to your loved ones. Are you ready?

To transfer education benefits to a dependent after July 31, 2013, Coast Guard members will be required to obligate an additional four years of military service, NOAA Corps or the Public Health Service to maintain the ability to transfer education benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. All service members unable to obligate an additional four years of service are encouraged to fill out their application to transfer education benefits no later than July 31.

For more information on how to transfer your benefits, please visit the Department of Veterans Affairs website.
