As part of the service’s ongoing effort to optimize the Coast Guard workforce, Rear Adm. Daniel Neptun recently issued a Flag Voice reminding active duty officers with more than 15 but less than 20 years of service of the opportunity to pursue early retirement via Temporary Early Retirement Authorization, or TERA. In all, the Coast Guard is looking to reduce the current active duty officer corps by 200 members by fiscal year 2018 to best meet the needs of our current mission portfolio.
Interested active duty officers who have accumulated at least 17 years of service on or before Oct. 1, 2014, have until Aug. 15, 2013, to submit a package to the Coast Guard Personnel Service Center for consideration. Members desiring early retirement must apply for consideration, and approval is not assured. If approved for TERA, members will receive a reduced pay and benefits package.
Officers who have integrated to become permanent commissioned officers must have ten years of commissioned service to retire as an officer. Temporary officers requesting early retirement with less than ten years of commissioned service will retire, if approved for TERA, at their permanent rank.
