Rear Adm. Stephen P. Metruck, assistant commandant for Resources & chief financial officer, has announced the suspension of mass transit benefits until Fiscal Year 2014 appropriations are made available to the Coast Guard.

During the current lapse of appropriations, any obligations incurred by the Coast Guard must be limited to those identified as exempt activities. The Coast Guard Mass Transit Benefits program is not listed among exempt activities, nor is the Coast Guard able to conduct financial transactions with the Department of Transportation, which manages the MTB program for the Coast Guard. Therefore, MTB benefits are suspended until Fiscal Year 2014 appropriations are made available to the Coast Guard.

Members may continue to use their current months benefits until they are exhausted. It is unknown whether retroactive benefits will be available once the lapse in appropriations ends.
