On Monday, members from Baltimore-area Coast Guard units joined administrators and students from the Brooklyn Park Middle School in Brooklyn Park, Md, for the school’s December “Just Lunch” program.

The “Just Lunch” program is designed to promote and encourage academic excellence among the students through positive mentorship. The “Just Lunch” program at Brooklyn Park Middle School partners students with local professionals and community members throughout the school year. Through interaction with positive role models during lunch, students are exposed to skills, attitudes and suggested behaviors to become life-long learners and productive members of society. Lunch topics include goal setting, teambuilding, the importance of self-respect and dealing with conflicts.

The Coast Guard Yard signed a memorandum of agreement with Brooklyn Park Middle School in September to establish an educational partnership with the goal of providing mentorship to the students through the monthly “Just Lunch” program. Ten Coast Guard members and one Coast Guard civilian employee from Sector Baltimore, Legacy Sustainment Support Unit, Electronics Repair Facility, and the Coast Guard Yard have joined their assigned mentored student for a one hour lunches each month since the beginning of the school year.

Volunteering in the communities where we live, train and operate is critical to Coast Guard mission success. Bravo zulu to our shipmates from the Baltimore region for making a difference in their community!

  1. Children look up to responsible adults as role models. When a adult gives positive attention to a child, even as simple as having lunch means the world to them. I see this program helping to contribute to healthy young minds and positive behaviors. BZ to Just Lunch participants!
