Johnson currently serves as a program reviewer in the Office of Budget and Programs. He enlisted in the active duty Coast Guard in April 1980 and served aboard the Coast Guard Cutters Unimak and Duane. Johnson was also assigned to the Coast Guard Research and Development Center in Groton, Conn.
In May of 1988, Johnson enlisted in the Coast Guard Reserve and furthered his career in a selected reserve assignment at Coast Guard Group Long Island Sound, Conn. While assigned there, he was deployed with the newly-formed PSU-301 to Operation Desert Storm. He completed follow-on SELRES assignments at Group South Portland, Maine and PSU-301 at Joint Base Cape Cod, Mass., before being recalled to active duty to serve as the active duty silver badge command master chief at Sector San Juan, Puerto Rico. Johnson later served as reserve senior enlisted assignment officer at Coast Guard Personnel Service Center in the Reserve Personnel Management Division. Johnson is a former State Trooper for the states of Connecticut and New Hampshire.
Johnson will report directly to the director of reserve and military personnel and will perform the duties of a personal advisor to the director and to senior Coast Guard leaders on all Coast Guard reserve enlisted personnel matters. Johnson will also serve as the Coast Guard representative to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs Senior Enlisted Advisory Council.
