Twice a month, Coast Guard All Hands will feature “From the Homefront,” a column for Coast Guard spouses by Coast Guard spouse Shelley Kimball. Shelley has been married to Capt. Joe Kimball, chief of the office of requirements and analysis at Coast Guard headquarters, for 14 years. She currently serves as an advisor for the Military Family Advisory Network.

Coast Guard kids have to weather a lot of storms, both literal and figurative, as they grow up in military life. The moving, the deployed parents, the new schools, the uncertainty. It can be wearing.
And yet, they persevere. They find the brightest spots in their Coast Guard lives, making us laugh and in some cases, loving this life so much they make it a career. And for me personally, Coastie kids inspire.
In celebration of the Month of the Military Child, we asked Coastie kids (including my own two) what they liked best about Coast Guard life.
“The best part about being a Coast Guard kid is that you get to see all these interesting places, and meeting news friends, while also being with your family. The Coast Guard is cool because they get to go out there and save lives every day. And if they didn’t do that, the population would drop.” – Joe Kimball, 12
“The coolest thing about a Coast Guard life is that you get to go to cool events that not any other kid goes to, and you get to move to new places that you haven’t been before and meet new people. The Coast Guard itself is pretty awesome because it has all these planes, helicopters and boats that can all go into a different location at the same time.” – Grace Kimball, 10
“The Coast Guard is super awesome. They are superheroes and save people. Almost like batman,” – Evan Townsend, 4.
“They save people and serve the country. It’s the right thing to do.” – RJ Tickell, 8.
“I like moving and having new friends, but I really like the moving fairy because she leaves us a gift in the new house,” – Sara Townsend, 6.
“The best thing about being in a Coastie family is: You get a whole lot of love from your family. Our family includes everyone on daddy’s boat!” – Jezabelle Pinto, 7.
“The best thing about being a Coastie kid is getting new friends all the time!” – Layla Pinto, 4.
“The best thing about being a Coastie kid is being able to travel a lot with the Coast Guard!” – Gracie Friss, 6.
“I like the Coast Guard because they help protect our country. They also take care of buoys, which is important, too. And sometimes they help rescue injured animals.” – Caroline Smith, 6.
“I like being a Coast Guard kid because you get to do cool things like tour boats and get in the helicopters. I want to be in the Coast Guard,” – Nicholas Ippolito, 8
“I like going to daddy’s work and sitting in the boats. I like to pretend I’m in the Coast Guard,” – Adriana Ippolito, 5.
“Getting to eat dinner on daddy’s boat.” – Bethany Bilodeau, 4.
“Buoys!” – Chase Bilodeau, 2 (who really loves watching big buoys).
“We get to see so many cool places!” – Kendall Allen, 10.
“The Coast Guard is awesome! They have helicopters, planes and boats. And some of the boats have guns. The Coast Guard is even part of the armed forces.” – Liam Smith, 5.
