Greetings from the Exciting! Vibrant! and Life-altering World of Coast Guard Financial Management!!!
…alright, so that intro may have been a little over the top but it doesn’t change the fact that the Officer Specialty Code, FIN10 – Financial Management, is currently one of the most dynamic specialties around. So who are these “FIN10s”? Well, they’re your Base and Air Station Comptrollers, your Sector Logistics, your District Budget Officers and they’re also dispersed throughout nearly all the offices at Headquarters.
Want to do a tour in District 14? There are FIN10 jobs there. Have an inkling to see Alaska? Boom! FIN10s there as well. Oh, your husband wants to get stationed in lovely San Diego? BOOM BOOM! FIN10s there too…we’re everywhere!
Financial Management is also one of OSCs with the highest growth in Advanced Education opportunities. This year we received 18 tabs, nearly twice as many as any other Advanced Education program, and we’re selecting personnel from every Coast Guard community – Afloat, Response, Prevention, and Aviators! The individuals selected will be heading off for an MBA or possibly a dual degree program with an MBA and a Master of Science in Accounting, Information Systems, or Finance. We currently have students enrolled throughout the country at Harvard, Maryland, Berkley and the University of Washington and this year we’ll be sending students to MBA programs in New York, Boston, San Francisco and Washington D.C.
So how did we receive so many tabs and why are we sending so many people to the country’s top MBA programs? Well, the answer is quite simple really; because it’s important. The Coast Guard’s FIN10s manage literally, billions of dollars, and are responsible for ensuring the utilization of these funds to maintain and build our cutters, support our shore infrastructure, pay our personnel and retirees, and oh by the way, execute all of our missions. While the people or assets on scene for a Coast Guard may change from mission to mission, and day to day, you can be certain that without funding, nothing and/or nobody would be there. #ThatHardNucleusYou’veHeardAbout.
How can you learn more? Well, you can give me a call and we can talk all things FIN10 and perhaps even swap a few sea/finance stories, or, and what would probably be the most beneficial, is to sit down and talk to one of the FIN10s near you. Ask them what they do, ask them what they will be doing, and find out how this OSC can help your career. Financial Management has a bum rap…it’s not flashy from the outside and yes, there are no pictures in this blog because FPD and Excel don’t photograph well, but if you really sit down and see the diverse duties and amount of responsibility our FIN10s do and have you might find another OSC that could open up all sorts of new professional doors.
