With the month of April fast approaching, many of us are likely becoming preoccupied with the semi-annual weigh-in requirement.
Feedback from the field suggests that many members go to extremes to “make weight”. Excessive practices include fad diets, extreme workouts, and the use of quick weight loss products. These can be dangerous endeavors, and will likely not result in permanent weight loss. For safe and effective weight management year-round, I recommend that you review the following Coast Guard (CG) approved web-sites:
- CG Health Promotion Resource Site: Your one stop site for health-related resources such as fitness, nutrition, weight management, tobacco cessation and CG policies.
- Operation Supplement Safety (OPSS): This site provides scientific evidence-based research on numerous dietary supplements (DS). DS may contain ingredients which pose a health risk, may be prohibited for CG members, or may cause harmful side effects when used with prescribed or over-the-counter medications. You can “Ask the Expert” to get the facts on supplements including efficacy, prohibited ingredients, and potential for harm.
- Human Performance Resource Center (HPRC) is sponsored by the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. This site offers numerous topics from nutrition to exercise designed to assist service members and their families on how to sustain a healthy lifestyle.
- CG SUPRT Health and Wellness Coaching: This site offers a no-cost telephonic and confidential health coaching service to help you achieve your personal wellness goals.
Maintaining a healthy weight is part of choosing a healthy lifestyle which includes the proper amount of sleep, nutrition and exercise.
