This year marks the 70th anniversary of the desegregation of the U.S. Armed Services and President Truman’s order that all service members receive equality of treatment and opportunity without regard to race, color, religion or national origin. Throughout our Nation’s history, African American military members and civilians have made extraordinary contributions to keeping the world safe for democracy. The theme for this year’s African American History Month is “African Americans in Times of War.” Therefore, it is appropriate that we pay homage to the countless men and women who sacrificed, fought and led the charge for freedom and equality for all. Coast Guard units and commands are encouraged to take time this month to honor and recognize the numerous accomplishments and contributions that African Americans have made and continue to make to our Service, our Nation and the world.

Each year the Coast Guard and the Department of Defense partner with Affinity Groups to salute military members and civilian employees for their civil rights accomplishments and contributions to fostering diversity within our service. This partnership offers an excellent opportunity to recognize Coast Guard personnel who promote community service, diversity and equal opportunity for all in the federal workforce. Awards programs and outreach events enhance the personal and professional development of Coast Guard personnel and inform the general public about the many career opportunities available to our nation’s youth. All commands are encouraged to support these important awards and events through nominations and attendance.

Each year, Military Times honors five “Everyday Heroes” — service members who demonstrate pride, dedication and courage beyond what is expected. These Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen and Coast Guardsmen show concern for their fellow servicemembers, their community and the country they serve. Nominations may be submitted by anyone who is aware of the awards program – including parents, fellow servicemembers, supervisors and commanding officers; making this grassroots award unique from any other awards given to members of our Armed Forces.
