The Coast Guard celebrates 227 years by honoring the past and securing the future. President Donald Trump is helping us celebrate this milestone with this personal birthday letter to the Coast Guard, which honors the men, women and families of the Coast Guard.
Today marks 226 years of service by America’s Coast Guard. Building upon our proud history, we are boldly addressing the vast maritime challenges facing our Nation. Strategically focused, we are leading the way into the 21st century. Guided by our suite of regional and functional strategies, we are focused in the Western Hemisphere, and Arctic and on guaranteeing economic security by countering the threats to our maritime infrastructure and cyber networks.
Today, the Coast Guard celebrates 225 years of Service to Nation. As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we also share our birthday with the commander in chief, President Barack Obama. As our service celebrated its 224th birthday yesterday, five servicemembers received a surprise phone call, and one a surprise visit, from the Coast Guard’s most senior leaders. Commandant of the Coast Guard Adm. Paul Zukunft and Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard Vice Adm. Peter Neffenger each recognized three servicemembers who exemplify excellence in mission execution and support at their respective units.
But today – while seemingly familiar in sight and sound – was far from typical. Today marks 224 years of exceptional service by the men and women of America’s Coast Guard. It was Aug. 4, 1790, when President George Washington signed an act bringing to life ten cutters “to be employed for the protection of the revenue.” Alexander Hamilton first conceptualized these cutters as a viable asset for the country; at the time, he wrote, “a few armed vessels, judiciously stationed at the entrances of our ports, might at a small expense be made useful sentinels of the laws.”
