Today, Coast Guard Vice Commandant Adm. Charles Michel appeared before the House Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee to discuss Coast Guard capabilities in the Arctic. During the hearing, the Vice Commandant highlighted the various operations the Coast Guard performs in the polar regions, including the protection of living and non-living marine resources, economic development, scientific research, pollution response, search and rescue and national defense.

Coast Guard Vice Commandant Vice Adm. Charles Michel testified on Arctic operations before a joint subcommittee hearing held today that included the Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats and the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, both with the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Each and every day, the Coast Guard combats the illicit drug trade in a six-million square mile area, including the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and Eastern Pacific. In addition to deterrence, Coast Guard drug interdiction accounts for nearly 52% of all U.S. government seizures of cocaine each year.
