The 37th Annual Salute to the Coast Guard was held Oct. 5, 2017 in New York City, to honor Coast Guard heroics from around the country. The evening honored Petty Officer 1st Class Walter Kendall, a boatswains mate at Coast Guard Station Erie, and Coast Guard Auxiliarists Robert and Patti Brody of Coast Guard Station Rochester who received the Foundation’s National Award for Heroism.

Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf’s crew was the 2016 recipient of the Coast Guard Foundation’s National Award for Heroism. From May 2015 to April 2016, the Bertholf crew, its Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron and Cryptological Group detachments completed two deployments to the Eastern Pacific totaling 213 days away from homeport. In all, the Bertholf crew detained 58 suspected narco-traffickers and prevented over 50,700 pounds of narcotics – with a street value of over $806 million – from reaching the United States. These efforts were responsible for over 10 percent of the Coast Guard’s total cocaine seizures in 2015.
The Coast Guard Foundation’s 2016 scholarship season is now open for children of enlisted, active duty reserve and retired U.S. Coast Guard men and women. In 2015, the Foundation provided more than $400,000 in scholarships to ease the financial burden of college for Coast Guard families, and ensure Coast Guard kids can afford to reach their higher education dreams.
Shelley Kimball’s newest “From the Homefront” blog highlights three Coast Guard-specific agencies that are ready to help: The Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association, Coast Guard Mutual Assistance and the Coast Guard Foundation.
The Coast Guard Foundation scholarship program is soliciting applications for the 2015-2016 academic school year starting Feb. 1 – March 15, 2015. Considerations for the selection of awardees include scholastic promise, motivation, moral character, leadership qualities, and good citizenship. Priority will be given to children of active-duty members.
In 2013, the scholarship fund awarded more than $445,000 to more than 60 deserving Coast Guard children. We are proud to say that we were able to provide every qualified applicant with a grant this year.

For the past few months Coast Guard members have prepared for CG Remember, a global event where servicemembers, dependents and civilians come together to honor the memory of Coast Guard members killed in the line of duty.
