The striking of eight bells at noon harkens back to the days of sail, when time was kept by the trickle of sand through a half-hour glass. One bell was rung for each passing half-hour to help keep track of the length of watches. At the end of a four-hour watch, with the striking of eight bells, the watch would change.
The Capt. Hopley Yeaton Cutter Excellence Award will be presented to one large cutter (210 ft and above), and one small cutter (175 ft and below). All cutters are eligible, including those in pre-commissioning or commission-special status. The Capt. Hopley Yeaton Superior Cutterman Award will recognize one officer and one enlisted member from across the fleet who best exemplify the cutterman spirit and Yeaton’s legacy.
