During Hurricane Harvey, Twarog began working on taking posts from social media asking for help and placing them on a map to give first responders a location to search.

When Hurricane Harvey made landfall in August 2017, Petty Officer 2nd Class Ashlee Leppert was one of the first aircrew members to deploy amidst raging winds and rising floodwaters. For her rescue efforts, President Donald Trump recognized Leppert and the hundreds of other Coast Guard members who responded to the hurricane at his 2018 State of the Union address.

The summer and fall of 2017 saw a nearly unprecedented string of hurricanes impacting the southeastern United States. As always, of course, Coast Guard units responded to every storm, providing rescue, recovery, and security assistance in areas that had been ravaged by extreme weather. For Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST) Miami in particular, it was a uniquely trying time in which personnel truly distinguished themselves through their perseverance and dedication: five weeks, three storm responses, an evacuation of their own homes, and a unit that came together through a difficult period to accomplish diverse missions and take care of their fellow Coast Guard members.

As our service members stationed on the Gulf Coast continue to conduct search and rescue operations to recover the victims of Hurricane Harvey, they also face personal damage to their own homes and displacement of their families. Coast Guard members can assist by providing donations through the appropriate channels. For all Coast Guard members stationed at units affected by Hurricane Harvey or deployed to the Gulf Coast in response to Hurricane Harvey, we hope to provide guidance for you and your family.
