From the Commandant: Our Oath

This past May, I presided over a citizenship ceremony at Faneuil Hall, Boston’s historic meeting place where our founders debated issues, argued the merits of public spending, and carried out free elections of leaders – beholden to the people – at a time when that was anything but normal. To this day, Faneuil Hall stands as the “Cradle of Liberty.”

July 4th is a celebration of American Independence and an appropriate time to reflect upon our Nation’s proud 239 year history. It is a history forged by the strength of our founders who suppressed tyranny and established a new republic on a bedrock of freedom and prosperity.

Celebrating the birth of our great Nation, we are reminded of the enduring spirit of America and the brave patriots who have fought for freedom, many of whom have paid the ultimate sacrifice. For more than two centuries, Coast Guard men and women have safeguarded Americans through a common thread that binds us all – Service to Nation.

Independence Day is a highlight of the summer and for many people there’s a lot of excitement around setting off colorful fireworks and grilling outdoors. As you plan your Fourth of July celebration with family and friends, please consider the following safety tips from the U.S. Fire Administration to ensure your holiday weekend is a safe one.


Independence Day

It was 236 years ago that our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence. Since then, generations of Americans have stepped forward to protect our freedoms that were first outlined in that Declaration. They have served, and continue to serve, our nation proudly at sea, on land and in the air, during peace or war. The men and women of America’s Armed Forces ensure the sacrifices of our forefathers and others who followed them were not made in vain.
