The Coast Guard Innovation Council assesses and provides strategic guidance on emerging technologies, missions, gaps, challenges and requirements. Recently, 12 Coast Guard members were honored for ideas that significantly impacted the service’s operations with the Capt. Niels P. Thomsen Innovation Awards during the Senior Leadership Conference held at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Do you have an idea on how to improve the Coast Guard? Would it stand up to a panel of sharks? The Coast Guard Innovation Program is hosting its version of the show Shark Tank, called Idea Frenzy, in February. All Coast Guard personnel are eligible to compete for a spot on Idea Frenzy; ideas must be submitted through CG_Ideas@Work by Jan. 9, 2018.
The Hurricane Lessons Learned challenge on the Coast Guard’s crowdsourcing platform, CG_Ideas@Work, was started as a way to preserve and institutionalize the wealth of lessons learned during hurricane response efforts. All Coast Guard personnel who participated in any of the response efforts are encouraged to share their observations, issues and ideas.
Over the course of 225 years, our service has evolved in how we protect the sea, protect people on the sea, and protect the country from threats delivered by the sea. But it has not done so without the great ideas, inventions and innovations contributed by our people.
The Coast Guard’s Innovation Council has launched Enterprise Common Ideation Platform , or ECIP, Connect – a crowd-sourcing tool designed specifically for members of our Coast Guard family, including active duty, civilian, reserve and Auxiliary, to help solve Service ‘challenges’ from anywhere, anytime, on any device.
