Mobility is a critical aspect for every military organization. For the Coast Guard, effective mobility is the capability to surge people, boats and equipment on short notice to an area of need. In cases of natural disasters or other catastrophic incidents the surge of assets must be accomplished quickly in order to save lives and property. The Coast Guard participated in the Air Force’s 2017 Operation Patriot Sands. Operation Patriot Sands is an annual joint, interagency exercise that allows units to practice cooperative transport of vital equipment using Air Force planes.

The U.S. Coast Guard and its predecessor services have made contributions in nearly every U.S. conflict since the Constitution became the law of the land. Joining that long tradition of service in defense of the homeland is the crew of Coast Guard Cutter Adak. Adak, one of six Coast Guard patrol boats in the region – part of Patrol Forces Southwest Asia, the Coast Guard’s largest unit outside the United States – focuses on maritime security, infrastructure protection, military-to-military assistance and supporting exercises in the Persian Gulf, U.S. Central Command’s area of responsibility.
Three small parts made one big difference for the crew of GC 109 Orion, a Dominican Republic patrol boat that received the critical components fabricated by a damage controlman aboard U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Oak in Saint Lucia during Tradewinds 2013. The replacement parts were a gift, custom-tailored for Orion by Petty Officer 3rd Class Marilyn A. Brammer, a damage controlman from Atwater, Calif. Brammer called upon nearly four years of training and experience to build these parts – three stainless steel, seawater strainers for Orion’s engine cooling system.
