Think back to your youth. Do you have a favorite sports team that dates back to when you were just a kid? If you grew up in just one location, maybe your team is a no-brainer. But for many military children, who might live in multiple cities during their young life, that question could be more difficult. However, there is one team that they should always be able to count on, and that is Team Coast Guard! And in the case of this story, the United Heroes League and the Washington Capitals also have our military children’s backs. “Laura was a crucial part of a team that helped relocate families during Hurricane Katrina in 2005,” said Terry Garrison, close friend and fellow ombudsman. “Family members were able to contact Laura and she would assist them with locating temporary housing until they could be reunited with their families.” Her ability to strengthen her family and community has led Vanderwerf to be chosen as the Coast Guard Military Spouse of the Year by Military Spouse Magazine.
