“As I visit Coast Guard units around the world, I am inspired by the passion and commitment of our Coast Guard women and men. To capitalize on that, this year we are transitioning from a Commandant’s Reading List to a Coast Guard Professional Development List with recommendations from across the workforce. This list offers a broad range of subject matter—from history to leadership to innovation—and represents the diverse ideas and perspectives that contribute to our greatest strength, our people. As shared in the Coast Guard Strategic Plan, professional development and continuous learning ensures we remain ready to confront our complex operating environment today and tomorrow.” -Adm. Karl Schultz, Commandant
The world all around us is changing – the dynamic geopolitical environment, the rapid dispersion of technology, and the very skills and platforms necessary for us to meet our critical missions. To keep pace with this environment, we too must learn and evolve in our critical thinking and expand our strategic perspective. Understanding that our 21st century workforce consumes both traditional and digital forms of communication, I am sharing my second Watch, Listen and Learn list
Last month, the Commandant shared his reading list as a way to encourage continued learning and personal growth. Recognizing your demanding operational schedules, I wanted to complement his reading list with other ways in which you can think about your role as a leader within our Coast Guard. Below are podcasts, TED talks and even a documentary that I have found inspiring and educational. In sharing this list, I encourage you to listen, watch and learn with the hope that the ideas they spark can be woven into your day and help you grow in your own leadership journey.
