Commandant of the Coast Guard Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp recently visited the Kingdom of Bahrain for an annual visit to Coast Guard Patrol Forces Southwest Asia and to meet with key maritime partners.

Bringing Eleanor home

On paper, it’s referred to as a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, one of the 281,000 built since the Humvee’s adoption by the U.S. military in 1985. To friends and historians, the sand-colored military vehicle is known instead as Eleanor II, and she’s one of a kind. She not only symbolizes the Coast Guard’s quiet contributions to the war in Afghanistan, but this particular Humvee also represents the layered connections between history, family and military service.

After losing his grandfather to cancer in 2001, Brooklyn, N.Y., native Michael Franco, looked for a greater way in which he could help others. Already a contributor to the annual blood drives at the police academy, Franco learned of becoming a bone marrow donor. This decision would lead Franco to save a woman’s life.
