Few people today know that on July 28, 1945, a large aircraft crashed into the Empire State Building. Fewer still know that the accident produced the world record for surviving an elevator fall and that the fall’s victim was rescued by a United States Coast Guardsman.
Like many selfless Coast Guardsmen, Lt. John Pritchard and Petty Officer First Class Benjamin Bottoms, a radioman, went in harm’s way to save lives only to sacrifice their own. During World War II, the Coast Guard ran the Greenland theatre of operations. It was one of the war’s deadliest battlegrounds, where men fought not only the enemy, but the elements as well.
Two Coast Guard members diving off Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, lost their vessel, along with their emergency position indicating radio beacon, marine radio and cell phones. With a flashlight and a filed float plan, the two were safely found and brought to shore after 4 1/2 hours drifting in the water.
Lt.j.g. Joann Elizalde, a reservist at Marine Safety Unit Chicago and a forester in her civilian career, heard a distress call of a man who had overturned his canoe in the cold waters of a Wisconsin lake while on a patrol of a forest. Elizalde took action to call for help and stayed with the man, giving him a glimmer of hope for survival.
An experienced kayaker shares her story of running into danger while kayaking in Cape Cod, Massachussets. The kayaker learned a valuable lesson that day and hopes that in sharing her story, others learn from her mistakes to always be prepared with the right equipment and to wear a life jacket.
It’s a story that sounds as if it were pulled right from the movies. High winds, rough seas, a rescue helicopter low on fuel and a crew determined to save a life. But the danger was real for the Kodiak, Alaska-based Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew on a mission to save the life of a cargo vessel crewman. In the end the crew gets the man to safety and the pilot earned a prestigious award for his efforts.
