The Long Blue Line: Pritchard and Bottoms – Last of the Coast Guard’s MIAs

Like many selfless Coast Guardsmen, Lt. John Pritchard and Petty Officer First Class Benjamin Bottoms, a radioman, went in harm’s way to save lives only to sacrifice their own. During World War II, the Coast Guard ran the Greenland theatre of operations. It was one of the war’s deadliest battlegrounds, where men fought not only the enemy, but the elements as well.

Honor, Respect, Devotion to Duty: Lt. j.g. Joann Elizalde

Lt.j.g. Joann Elizalde, a reservist at Marine Safety Unit Chicago and a forester in her civilian career, heard a distress call of a man who had overturned his canoe in the cold waters of a Wisconsin lake while on a patrol of a forest. Elizalde took action to call for help and stayed with the man, giving him a glimmer of hope for survival.

Honor, Respect, Devotion to Duty: Lt. Paul Johansen

It’s a story that sounds as if it were pulled right from the movies. High winds, rough seas, a rescue helicopter low on fuel and a crew determined to save a life. But the danger was real for the Kodiak, Alaska-based Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew on a mission to save the life of a cargo vessel crewman. In the end the crew gets the man to safety and the pilot earned a prestigious award for his efforts.
