After Hurricane Matthew dumped 18 inches of rain on North Carolina, Coast Guard Western River Flood Punt Team worked with local and state agencies to assist. The team, comprised of members from Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River, Upper Mississippi River and Aids to Navigation Team Colfax, Louisiana, completed a total of 23 missions, eight rescues and more than 280 wellness checks.

Flooding in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, began on August, 12, 2016. By August 15, 2016, more than 10 rivers had reached moderate, major or record flood stage, leading to one of the worst floods in the city’s history. The Coast Guard sent several air and boat crews to assist the flood victims. This is only two of their stories, along with the people they assisted.
This painting by Coast Guard artist Ken Smith, titled “Air Station Savannah,” is the winner of the Coast Guard Art Program’s 2009 George Gray Award. “Air Station Savannah” headlines “Semper Paratus,” an exhibition of Coast Guard art on loan to the Pritzker Military Library in Chicago until January 2010.
