This month’s commemoration of women’s history highlights the achievements of women in the Coast Guard and celebrates their qualities of character, courage and commitment. In the next four weeks, we will be introducing you to four women who are making an impact in the Coast Guard. Each of these dedicated officer and enlisted leaders embodies this year’s theme that has served her well in her career.

This year, we will welcome new Fast Response Cutters into the fleet to enhance our operational readiness and honor the memory of our enlisted heros; we will continue to save thousands of lives, interdict illicit drugs headed for our communities, and prevent threats to our homeland from being delivered by sea; and we will witness the time-honored tradition of the change of command ceremony as we welcome a new Commandant of the Coast Guard to lead our service.

If you’re fortunate enough to have some downtime to spend with loved ones today and throughout the holdiay season, be safe in your travels and please take a moment to think about your shipmates standing the watch and their families.

On this day in 1942, Signalman 1st Class Douglas Munro made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his country as he gave his own life to save the lives of 500 U.S. Marines at Gudalcanal.
