As a spectator, there’s really only one way to approach an event like the Warrior Games: humbly. For the uninitiated, Warrior Games is a week of adaptive sports competition for service members and veterans. Whether sustained in combat or brought on through a tragic accident or diagnosis, the athletes competing in the events are all doing so with struggles that make even everyday life more difficult than it once was. If you have a service related injury or illness you may be eligible to file a claim for compensation, or receive care from a VA medical facility. Hughes, whose mother was a WAVE during World War II, knew nothing about her mother’s service. She said her mother never spoke of her service and never kept any records. Hughes only learned of her mother’s service from a photograph sent to Hughes by her cousin after her mother had passed away. In the photo, her mother was 25 years old and graduating from officer candidate school. And now, this project will help to preserve the history and honor women that choose to serve our country and ensure their legacies do not go untold.
Members who serve in any of the five armed services earn a highly coveted title that can never be taken from them: Veteran. Coast Guard Veteran Tristan Heaton has utilized the skills and training gained in his service to help other veterans as part of the Department of Veteran’s Affairs Adaptive Sports program.

Fourteen retired, active and reserve servicewomen kicked off New York Fashion Week after walking the runway at New York City’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Sept. 3, 2014. Little Black Dress Wines and Fatigues to Fabulous (F2F), a campaign supporting women as they transition back to being a private citizen, sponsored the fashion show “Salute the Runway.”
