Last week, Admiral Zukunft held his third State of the Coast Guard Address. He started his remarks with a single word that represents the men and women of our Coast Guard: phenomenal. You – our active, reserve, civil service and auxiliary members – are at the very heart of what has made this an exceptional year for our Coast Guard. You truly are phenomenal.
Our Coast Guard is in demand worldwide, and I am inspired when I observe our 88,000 active duty, civilian, reserve, and auxiliary members carrying out or supporting our missions. And, all of us are supported by family and friends who make up our larger Coast Guard family. Many of you will be celebrating with your loved ones this holiday season, and we must also remember those standing the watch in Service to Nation.

Today, the Coast Guard’s Leadership Council commenced its 9th meeting under the direction of Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft. Formally established 18 years ago, the Leadership Council is the Commandant’s senior-most, formal decision-making and advisory body.

When a man’s sailboat caught fire 69 miles from Hudson, Florida, a Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Clearwater, Florida, rescued him and his dog, Evi. The man discusses his actions and his gratefulness to the crew for having his back in the final video of this year’s top 10 competition.
In any given day aboard Coast Guard Cutter Boutwell, the crew deploys cutters, aircraft and personnel to engage in operations encompassing a variety of Coast Guard missions through the Bering Strait up the Northern Alaska Outer Continental Shelf.
