Last week, Admiral Zukunft held his third State of the Coast Guard Address. He started his remarks with a single word that represents the men and women of our Coast Guard: phenomenal. You – our active, reserve, civil service and auxiliary members – are at the very heart of what has made this an exceptional year for our Coast Guard. You truly are phenomenal.

Our Coast Guard is in demand worldwide, and I am inspired when I observe our 88,000 active duty, civilian, reserve, and auxiliary members carrying out or supporting our missions. And, all of us are supported by family and friends who make up our larger Coast Guard family. Many of you will be celebrating with your loved ones this holiday season, and we must also remember those standing the watch in Service to Nation.

As the cruise ship Crystal Serenity and her 1,700 passengers and crew began her maiden northerly voyage from Alaska to New York this past week, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft and Arctic Caucus co-chairman Sen. Angus King held engagements in Greenland to personally observe and better understand the changes occurring in the Arctic.
